Aphrodisiac: a substance that increases sexual desire. Origin: Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of sexuality and love.
Looking for love (read: lust) in local places? Check out this quick list of easy-to-find aphrodisiacs:
Chocolate contains phenylethylamine and serotonin, two chemicals that spark certain pleasures in the psyche.
Get some! Co Co. Sala Restaurant and Chocolate Boutique (929 F Street, NW) in Penn Quarter for your choice of daytime or evening desserts. If you decide to dine in, be sure to check out their Signature Sips menu for some cold cocktails to warm you up. I highly recommend FETISH for the strawberries and sexy foam alone. CO COJITO is a good choice, if you’re into dark chocolate. You can also take your chocolate treats “TO GO”, in case you’re eager to get back to…you know Fellas, you KNOW how we ladies feel about all things chocolate, so…get on the ball — preferably chocolate-flavored.
Licorice, derived from the Glycyrrhiza glabra root, which is said to enhance lust. Since ancient times, the scent and taste of licorice is said to bring about positive effects to hormone-producting glands within the body’s endocrine system.
This will be one of the easier purchases. Licorice (i.e., Twizzlers) can be found at your local dollar/discount store (Dollar Tree, Dollar King, Family Dollar), candy store (Sweet Factory in Pentagon City) or your grocer’s snack/candy aisle (Check out this listing of Farmer’s/Amish Markets. I just love J & R’s Candies at the Dutch Country Farmer’s Market). If you wanna get fancy, you can order an assortment of colors, flavors and shapes from Candy Warehouse online.
Oysters are one of the more well-known aphrodisiacs. Oysters, while high in vitamins A; B1; B2; B3; C; and D, proteins and carbohydrates, also put you in the mood for love(making). Since my shellfish allergy doesn’t allow me to partake in such cuisine, I had to do a little research for some of the area’s BEST Raw Bars:
* Carmine’s (Penn Quarter)
* J. Paul’s (Georgetown)
* Old Ebbitt Grill* (downtown)
* Clyde’s* (Gallery Place/Chinatown, Mark Center/Alexandria)
* McCormick & Schmick’s (DC, VA)
* Legal Seafoods** (Penn Quarter, Crystal City/Arlington, Tysons Galleria II, Westfield Montgomery Mall/Bethesda)
* The Oceanaire Seafood Room (downtown)
If you wanna get an early start to your evening, check out the Oyster Happy Hour* for half-off ALL Raw Bar items Sunday thru Thursday, 3pm-6pm and 11pm-1am. Since oysters go great with wine, so be sure to review the Wine List and inquire of your pairing options. There’s also a $6.00 Raw Bar Sampler/Happy Hour**. Times may vary. Check sites for details and exclusions.
Exercise: Along with weight-management and an energy-boost, exercise is a great way to relieve stress and tension. All things considered, exercise will also improve your sex life. (This makes me glad I invested in a Wii Fit, so I can keep the fitness party going “in house”.)
Here’s an idea: After a romantic evening in the city, head to Georgetown’s Pleasure Place (erotic boutique) for a few things to get the evening started. The walk alone should help burn a few hundred calories. The excitement of your purchase should almost double that number.
Literature: The Kama Sutra and Ananga Ranga lists plenty of tips and tricks to get you–and your lover–where you need to go. Click here to purchase one–or both–for your reading pleasure.
Here are some Aphrodisiac Foods & Recipes from Gourmet Sleuth that go into detail about the history of certain foods and the effect that they have on human hormones. You’d be surprised (or maybe you wouldn’t!) about the everyday food, beverage and seasonings that trigger certain sensations.
Enjoy, explore and be safe!
