Partisan politics may stifle Congress but, a few short blocks away, donkeys and elephants graze in perfect harmony. Since 1967, Hawk ‘n’ Dove has been serving good eats and spirits to District residents and Capitol Hill staffers.
Advertised as “DC’s oldest Irish bar”, the restaurant has a cozy feel. The walls are decorated with antiques and other nostalgic items including pictures of presidents past, 19th century newspaper clippings, and bumper stickers from political campaigns over the decades.
Hawk ‘n’ Dove has a full bar and is popular for its beers. They offer 16 different selections, 11 of which are draft.
The food is good; as good as can be expected for a moderately priced pub. However, there is one item on the menu that wins by a landslide! The famous Hawk ‘n’ Dove Crab Reuben is delicious. Made with lump crab, Swiss cheese, Thousand Island dressing and rye-bread, the beauty of the taste is in its simplicity. The sandwich is served with French fries (potato skin on), coleslaw and a slice of pickle. Even one with a small appetite is guaranteed to clean the plate when one’s meal is the Hawk ‘n’ Dove Crab Reuben. FYI, the New Castle brown ale washes it down perfectly.
