UPTOWN: The Local “Movie-Buff’s” Theater

For a true movie-buff, a night at the cinema is much more than seeing a good flick.  From standing in line and manuevering through bustling crowds to surround sound and the sinful taste of hot buttered popcorn, going to the movies is about the overall experience.  The historic Uptown Theater, in DC’s Cleveland Park neighborhood, is a favorite among local movie buffs.  It seated 1,120 when it opened in 1936 and holds 850 since being remodeled in 1996.  Nostalgia is much of the Uptown’s appeal.  That and  an impressive 70 ft wide, 40 ft high screen.   The Uptown has been host to many world movie premieres including:

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Star Trek: The Motion Picture  (1979)
Dances With Wolves (1990)

World Premire of 2001: Space Odyssey 1968
